History

Originally called The Hanwell Camera Club, Northfields Camera Club was founded in 1958 by a local Baptist minister, Reverend PG Kirby,  who was a professional photographer before entering the Baptist ministry. The club moved to its present location in 1960 and was renamed Northfields Camera Club in 1962. In the same year a local photographic shop owner, Vic Tennant, became chairman.

Tony Meyer was a founder member of the Hanwell Camera Club and continued to attend most weeks, running the refreshments, until he passed away in the early 2020s.

The club has now been active for nearly seventy years and continues to attract a members from the local community and farther away. We are pleased to see that the photographic standard has increased over the years although, looking at the first print to ever win a competition at Northfields, then Hanwell, and recent entries for our Print and Projected Image of the year competitions, the standard has always been high.

Here are some pictures from the early seventies (we think) which were sent to us recently by Geoff Smith. We think they were taken at Hanwell Carnival, if you recognise anyone, let us know!

Geoff says,

“I was a junior member of Hanwell camera club back in 1969-70, when after my family moved to Suffolk. Recently I found a number of un-developed films in my loft. Choosing one at random I had it developed, I sold my developing kit years ago. On getting it back they are photos of Hanwell carnival, probably 1969 and in particular an Austin 7 with a Hanwell Camera Club banner on it. I remember the day, a member with the car was in the parade and I walked alongside with a bucket.”
